Not even when my father passed away. But that night, with Rex’s head resting in my lap, the tears wouldn’t

stop.

His breaths were slow, unsteady. The vet had delivered the news: it was time. His body was failing, and

holding on would only prolong his suffering. But how do you say goodbye to the best partner you’ve ever

had?

sniffed out drugs, and found missing kids. Braver than most officers I’d known, he was my rock. Now, curled

running out. I carried him to the vet, joined by Millie, a retired sergeant who understood my pain. Together,

we said goodbye as Rex slipped away peacefully in my arms. “Thank you, Rex,” I choked out. “Thank you.”
A Legacy of Courage and Love

woods, he embodied loyalty and bravery. When my old squad sent a card thanking us both for our service, and when a young man—once saved by Rex—shared how he’d built a youth mentorship program in gratitude, I realized Rex’s impact reached far beyond me.

mantle and his leash in my hand became symbols of peace. One day, on our favorite hiking trail, I found

clarity: I’d volunteer at that mentorship program, sharing Rex’s story to inspire kids who felt lost—just like he

guided me.
Turning Pain into Purpose

his courage and hope. Loss hurts—it’s okay to cry, to feel broken. But the best way to honor those we’ve lost

is to live their legacy. For me, that’s helping others find their way, just as Rex did for me.

Have you lost someone dear—a pet, a loved one, a piece of yourself? Take their lessons and share them.

That’s how we keep them alive in our hearts.
